An intimate premiere of new collaborative compositions from NYX and composer, violinist and performance artist Alicia Jane Turner with Dead Light (Anna Rose Carter and Ed Hamilton). Exploring breath, the sonorities of the female voice and the relationship between the internal and external body, this visceral new work will challenge the sonic interconnections between classical instrumentation, voice and synthetic textures.

Alicia’s practice focuses on the visceral affectivity of sound and live music in performance, using compositions and immersive sound design to explore the relationship between the internal and external body. In her work and research she interrogates the gendered politics of listening, silence and noise, using sound to ask questions about physicality, identity and intimacy. Her compositions fuse the textures of noise music and ambient minimalism with classical instrumentation and electronics, to create dissonant and intricately layered pieces

Alicia was a composition fellow at the Bang on a Can 2018 Summer Festival where her new classical works were premiered, and has toured internationally with her collaborative and solo theatre works and performance pieces, including Breathe (Everything Is Going To Be Okay), This Is How We Die and Kissing The Shotgun Goodnight with Christopher Brett Bailey.

Dead Light was created after Anna Rose Carter and Ed Hamilton moved from London to a quiet, remote space in the countryside. Dead Light’s sound is characterised by distant and reflective, yet intimate and emotive piano motifs coupled with a plethora of analogue artefacts ranging from loops constructed on cheap old tape machines, tape delays (via daisy chained reel to reel machines), homemade synthesisers, contact mics etc. Their music draws upon classical, ambient, pop and electro-acoustic influences.

NYX is a collaborative drone choir and otherworldly electric chorus, re-embodying live electronics and extended vocal techniques. An experiential exploration of ambient, noise & electronic music, NYX makes ambient and ecstatic sonic landscapes, punctuated with acoustic glitching, polyphonic overtone and electric textures.

NYX is made with support by Arts Council England, commune, nonclassical, Ableton and The Quietus.

NYX is a collaborative project between Sian O’Gorman, Philippa Neels and Joshua Thomas.
