Workshop Two
Wed 13 May, 6-8pm BSTThis period of pandemic and lockdown has brought huge changes in our lives, and also our soundscape. Following on from her hugely popular workshops earlier this year, Fieldwave sound artist Kate Carr leads us in two remote workshops exploring these changes through deep listening, field recording and composition.
The first session will be a general introduction to field recording with a discussion and listening session focused on uncovering changes in our soundscape. In the second session, participants come back together to share recordings and compositions inspired by discussion and listening from the first session.
The workshops are suitable for beginners as well as experienced recordists. It will include introductory material for those with less experience where required. Space is limited to 15 places for the two workshops, which take place on Zoom conference equipment (instructions will follow upon purchasing a ticket). Participants will need to use their own equipment (smart phone or zoom recorder) and comply with the government's advice on social distancing throughout the project.
Tickets are available on a Pay What You Can basis with a £10 minimum donation. 100% of donations will go towards Kate's time preparing and running these two 2-hour workshops – please give generously to support artists at this strange time.
About the artist
Kate Carr
Carr has been investigating the intersections between sound, place, and emotionality both as an artist and a curator since 2010. During this time she has ventured from tiny fishing villages in northern Iceland, explored the flooded banks of the Seine in a nuclear power plant town, recorded wildlife in South Africa, and in the wetlands of southern Mexico.
Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wire, Pitchfork, Fact Magazine, The Quietus, and Guardian Australia. It has also been played on the radio on stations ranging from various channels of the BBC, to independent stations in Estonia.
Carr regularly performs throughout the UK and Europe, with recent performances taking place at the Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, Cafe Oto, Instants Chavires (Paris) and AB Salon (Brussels).
Her music can be found on the labels Helen Scarsdale (US), Hasana Editions (Indonesia), Rivertones (UK), Soft (France) Longform Editions (Australia) Galaverna (Italy) as well as on her own label Flaming Pines.
2019 commissions include: New compositional work for BBC Radio 3 and Radiophrenia Festival, Glasgow, as well as the ACE-funded installations Under Construction, TACO Gallery and Ascending composition No 1 for Air Matters, Waterman's Gallery.
Carr is Australian, and lives in London.

On Sunday 20 February we took over the Barbican with live performances, DJ sets and more for our curated event listening to place. The day was centred around artists responses to location-based sound and field recordings.
